The department of psychology, IIS University (Deemed to be university, Jaipur), organised a webinar on “PCOS and Vaginal Health” on 23rd February, 2021. The speaker for the Webinar was Dr. Ruchi Bhandari, who is presently an infertility specialist and a director at Mishka IVF centre, Jaipur. Dr. Bhandari is a holder of various degrees; she is a gold medallist in MS (obgyn). She also has a master’s degree in cosmetic gynaecology and has a diploma in ultrasound in infertility.
Dr. Bhandari started the session with a wonderful opening saying that, “We all take care of our external beauty but often tend to ignore the internal beauty” thereby reflecting the importance of vaginal health. The speaker wanted to clarify all the major doubts and myths regarding vaginal health and PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome).
In her enlightening session, the speaker very descriptively explained the anatomy of vagina, vaginal Flora, vaginal odour and vaginal discharge. It was indeed really helpful for the audience as Dr. Bhandari tried to normalize certain facts that are often hesitated by most women.
The speaker went on further to give certain tips to take care of vaginal health such as, she suggested to not use any perfumes, chemical lubricators and any foreign material like douche inside the vagina. The speaker also happened to educate the audience about an important test known as Pap smear which is a test used to prevent cervical problems later in life.
The speaker didn’t skip a chance to keep the audience at edge as she also talked about the most misinformed topic, PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome). She talked about how common this syndrome is nowadays and gave the important features of the same. Dr. Bhandari wonderfully explained the causes of this disorder in a very simple way so that the audience can get a grip of it easily.
Dr. Bhandari made the audience get aware about the treatment and diagnosis as well. In this, she informed how the treatment isn’t done single handedly rather it is a holistic approach which involves psychologists, dieticians, fitness trainers etc. She also talked about some of the most common therapies used to treat PCOS, in which she stated that a healthy diet tops the chart followed by lifestyle changes involving exercise and meditation and the second line treatment involves taking prescribed medicines and surgery.
By the end of the session, participants also got a chance to raise several considerable questions which Dr Bhandari answered thoroughly. One of the participants raised a question regarding the fact that whether the diet should differ as a woman ages through the different developmental milestones, to this Dr. Bhandari suggested that a healthy lifestyle and diet are important to be maintained religiously no matter what age we are in as this helps to keep the body stable and disease free. To the other question which revolved around the fact that whether treatment for PCOS is even helpful, the speaker gave a very informative reply saying that since PCOS has a different spectrum therefore it totally depends upon how severe the problem is and hence based on that the treatment and prognosis may also vary. Besides this, as an ending note, Dr. Ruchi also informed how it is important to know the right type of lifestyle since it varies from woman to woman.
It was a very interesting session wherein the audience got such a delightful opportunity to hear Dr. Ruchi keep her views on the problems of vaginal health and PCOS. Such enriching affairs are ought to be pondered upon and raised more frequently.
