Workshop on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Department of Psychology and Counselling and Career Development Centre, The IIS University, Jaipur organized a workshop of two levels of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, from 5th March to 10th March, 2018.

CBT is evidence based scientific therapy that aims at helping individual to manage their problems by changing their cognitions (the way they think) and behaviour (the way they respond). The first day sessions primarily focused on negative automatic thoughts that people generate related to any event or situation. On second day, the concept of different cognitive distortion was covered and more clarity about the procedure and different aspect of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was given. It was shown that distortions operate and manoeuvre the thinking patterns. It is important to understand and identify these distortions with precision to work upon the set agenda and proceed with the counselling process. The day 3 of level-1 CBT Workshop provided the students with an overview of structured application of CBT.

CBT functions in 3 parts:

  1. Information Collection
  2. Usage of Downward Arrow Technique
  3. Cognitive Restructuring

The Level 1 of CBT Workshop gave a basic overview of the therapy, providing students with an opportunity to apply it to general life problems.

The Level 2 focused on CBT application to anxiety disorders and depression. Day 1 started with a quick revision of Level 1 CBT training. Motivation Intervening to trigger change, how to customize change for each client, various levels of motivation, techniques to motivate client, were some major topics covered by Dr. Pandey. 

The Day 2 of Level 2 CBT workshop session specifically focused on application of CBT to Depressive Disorders.

The Day 3 of Level 2 CBT workshop began with a quick revision of anxiety and its concepts and disorders. After this, the students were enriched with some core strategies that can be used for reducing anxiety. Various strategies to develop an effective new belief in client, strategies of emotional regulation, exposure techniques, relaxation techniques, fear hierarchy strategy were all being explained to the students.  Various fun activities were used to explain important strategies. This was followed by a deep understanding of different forms of anxiety originating in different anxiety disorders, the cycle of anxiety and how to break this cycle in therapy. Using worry tree technique, shame attack exercises, relaxation techniques to overcome or fight back anxiety were the self-help lessons for the session 1.
