Date: 28/5/16

Venue: AV Hall

Resource Person: Dr. Whoolery Matthews, Professor, Brigham Young University, Idaho, USA

Report:

In order to encourage better understanding of research methodology the Department of Psychology at the IIS University organized a guest lecture  on 28th August 2016 in AV Hall. The lecture was attended by post graduate students and research scholars.

Dr Whoolery was welcomed with flowers and a memento by Dr Roopa Mathur, Dean Academics and Dr. Chandrani Sen, HOD, Dept of Psychology.

Prof Whoolery talked about research methodology –its appropriate usage. He started off with an activity in which he asked all to complete incomplete sentences. Then these answers were exchanged amongst those present. With this activity he emphasized the limitations of psychological assessment. He said scales/ tests which are used in America should not be used in India and vice versa because these are constructed on the basis of learning, norms and behavioural patterns and interactions embedded in that particular culture. He also stressed that research should be collaborative so that cross-cultural studies can be conducted. He also said that apart from quantitative research qualitative aspect should also be looked into. It was a good interactive session attended by PG students, research scholars and Faculty of the department.

In the end a formal vote of thanks was proposed. This lecture was followed by an interactive session with the faculty in meeting room where various aspects of research were discussed and further possibilities of future collaborations were also discussed.
