The Department of Psychology Organised a session on “ How self plays an important role in counseling” at AV Hall ,IISU campus. The session focused on the need for self work before seeing clients . The esteemed speakers who were our alumni Dr. Shalu and Ms. Priyancy highlighted the importance of self detachment from the client, emotional regulation, self disclosure empathy by role play activities with the students. They explained the actual procedure of the counseling process via real life exposure and live demonstration. The session gave insightful learning on how counseling skills like active listening, body posture, eye contact , paraphrasing , goal setting etc plays a vital role while counseling a client. They further discussed how self-awareness allows counselors to empathize better with clients and respond to their needs effectively . The session aimed at practical training and learning for the students to provide with how the counseling process plays out in real life setting, making them understand the concept of mutual rapport in the counseling process.
Outcome: Students understand the importance of self work and counseling skills utilization in the field of counseling . They really enjoyed the session as it was more on practical training and by observing the real cases they got an understanding on developing effective counseling skills required for a psychologist.
